Orthodox Christians around the world are celebrating Easter, the most important holiday in the Christian calendar.

Easter Sunday is the main religious holiday for Orthodox Christians in Russia. Over 4,5 mln Russians took part in Easter services around the country last night, Olga Shklyarova, spokeswoman for the Russia’s Interior Ministry's public order department told the Interfax news agency.

Divine services and sacred processions were held in 9,3 thousand cathedrals, churches and monasteries. “ The highest number of believers - over 370 thousands - attended the Saturday night worship in the Krasnodar region, with 257 thousands gathrering in the Rostov region, 190thousands in the Ryazan region and 175 thousand people in Nizhegorodskaya oblast,” the spokeswoman noted.

Over 137 thousand believers have attended 266 Moscow churches, cathedrals and monasteries; the Moscow region’s churches welcomed 152 thousand worshippers, Interfax reports.

“No relevant accidents or public order breaches were reported last night,” the Interior Ministry's press secretary stressed. According to the  information she provided, about 85 thousand policemen and Interior Minsitry troops were used to provide security protection during Easter services.

Every year, the Holy Fire is brought to Russia – its first stop was the country’s main Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Afterwards, it will be delivered to destinations across Russia, including the North Pole.

For the first time, this year the Easter service at the Christ the Saviour Cathedral was held in 18 languages, including Aramaic and Chinese, besides clerical Slavic, Russian, Latin and Greek. Languages traditionally used in the past, – to signify the unity of all Orthodox Christians across the world.

After queuing for hours to enter the cathedral and light their candles from the Holy Fire, Russian believers filled the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow, where Mass was celebrated for the first time by the Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia

The list of VIP guests attending the service included President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
