A Sberbank cash collector turned himself in yesterday to the police in Zelenogradsk, Kaliningrad Region, Vesti newspaper reports. The 33-year-old bank employee had taken nearly a million rubles from the bank’s vault and hoped to “break the bank” at the local casino.
Apparently, the theft had gone unnoticed but, 12 days later, the thief went to the police to confess to his crime. He had taken 940,500 rubles ($30,200) and intended to replace them with his casino winnings. Instead, the man lost the entire sum in slot machines.
A criminal case has been initiated against him, a police source said.
