Mikhail Gorbachev will found new political party

13 May, 06:07 PM

One-time president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev announced today that he would return to politics with the creation of a new political party. The party will be called the Independent Democratic Party of Russia, he said today.

“We have arrived at the conclusion that there should be such a party in the country, and the work of the initiative committee for its creation has already received the support of many citizens,” Interfax quotes Gorbachev as saying. Gorbachev also claimed to have received 10,000 letters in support of the new party.

Arguments and Facts Online quotes the former president as saying that the new party, which he characterized as “social-democratic,” will make it a priority to advance the “anti-crisis initiative” developed by economists at the Gorbachev Foundation.

Gorbachev, 78, was the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, essentially the national leader, from 1985 to 1991. Constitutional powers were transferred to the position of president of the country in 1990, and Gorbachev occupied that post as well.

The Soviet Union was effectively dismantled, and Gorbachev forced out of office, in December 1991 when the presidents of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus formed the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Gorbachev founded the Gorbachev Foundation in 1992. He ran unsuccessfully against his successor Boris Yeltsin in the president elections of 1996 and has founded two earlier political parties. He is also part owner of the opposition Novaya Gazeta newspaper.
